In Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Emperor’s New Clothes, two fraudsters, pretending to be renowned tailors, play a trick on a vain emperor and his entire entourage. They claim they can make him an outfit from a magnificent, priceless fabric only visible to those of above-average intelligence: those with the qualities needed to serve in the emperor’s court. The fabric, of course, does not actually exist. The two fake tailors boast about their extraordinary skills and drag the court officials and the emperor himself into a whirlwind of deceit. Instead of admitting what appears in front of their eyes, the disingenuous officials insist they can see the wonderful cloth, to avoid being considered stupid and unfit for office.
It is only when a young boy with no preconceived ideas starts shouting “he’s in the nude!” that, as if by magic, the trick is revealed, and everyone starts to laugh.
